Best Practices to Convert WordPress to Mobile App

When you convert WordPress to a mobile app, try following these best practices so your  app performs effectively.

1. Funnel Mobile Devices to the Mobile Site

Redirect mobile devices to mobile versions of your website using server-side redirects.

2. Use a Mobile-First Design

A mobile-first approach to developing websites ensures that your website will work on all devices. So use HTML5 DocType for mobile devices.

3. Use Viewport Metadata to Create a Responsive Site

By using viewport metadata specifying device sizes on your document (head), it will resize your webpage for different mobile devices.

4. Use a Vertical Layout

Scrolling up and down on phone devices is more user-friendly than trying to do it from left to right. Make use of a vertical linear layout.

5. Steer Clear of Wrapping

To avoid incorrect sizing of your website on mobile devices, you must set the width and height to match the parent. Avoid wrapping content because it will result in incorrect sizing.

6. Reduce Bandwidth Requirements

Mobile devices have a slower loading speed than desktops, so avoid multiple file requests.

Inventory and Stock Management Plugins for WooCommerce and WordPress
Web Designing

Inventory and Stock Management Plugins for WooCommerce and WordPress

Do you want to instantly know the amount of inventory you have and where it is stored? Maybe you’ve been in the unenviable position of products being out of stock, with back orders piling up.

When your inventory management is done well, order fulfillment goes smoothly. But you can’t achieve this if you’re using antiquated methods like managing inventory using spreadsheets or closing down your operations for a stock count.

Here is where inventory plugins come in!

Inventory plugins are automated inventory management systems that help you keep an accurate count

Do you want to have immediate knowledge of the quantity of inventory you own as well as the locations in which it is kept?
Perhaps you’ve found yourself in the unpleasant situation of having things that are out of stock while back orders continue to pile up.
Order fulfillment runs efficiently if there are no hiccups in the administration of your inventory.
But you won’t be able to accomplish this goal if you cling to archaic practices such as monitoring inventory via the use of spreadsheets or pausing your activities in order to conduct stock count.
The inventory plugins are all you need at this point!
Inventory plugins are automatic inventory management solutions that provide you with the ability to see the current stock situation in real time and help you maintain an exact count of your inventory.
They make it possible for you to manage all of your goods from single location, which is particularly useful if you have more than one storage facility or warehouse.
They will also keep track of your orders and assist you in determining which of your items are selling well, which are not selling well, and how you can use this information to your advantage in promoting things that are not selling as well.
On top of that, inventory plugins enable you to make the best choice possible by assisting you in analyzing the connection between sales and stock levels in your business.
For instance, if you have more of one thing than you have of another, does it indicate that it is more popular or that you just have more of that item in stock than you do of the other item?

of your inventory and see your stock situation in real time. They help you manage all your stock from one place, especially if you have multiple storage locations or warehouses.

They also keep track of orders and help you see which products are selling well, which products are not, and how you can take that as an opportunity to promote products that are lagging behind.

On top of that, inventory plugins allow you to make the right decision because they help you see the relationship between stock and sales. For example, if one item is selling more than the other, is it because it is popular or is it because you have a lot of it in stock compared to another item?

Products that share more than one attribute are tracked, and available quantities are displayed on the front-end to prevent overpurchasing. You can easily track and manage shared stock, variable stock, linked stock, product addons, product combos, parts, measurements, ingredients, and more!

From the admin page, you can manage the attributes of stock items by setting SKUs, internal notes, low stock thresholds, product filters, and more. You will receive alerts when stocks with particular attributes are running low or are finished. You can also keep track of your attribute stock with WooCommerce stock reports.

It is compatible with 99% of other plugins, such as variation swatches, POS systems, subscriptions, product bundles, cart stock reducer, WP-Lister, WPML, and more.

6. WooCommerce Quickbooks Connector

WooCommerce Quickbooks Connector

WooCommerce Quickbooks Connector automatically syncs your WooCommerce store orders, customers, inventory, products, payments, and bank deposits to QuickBooks Online. It offers real-time two-way syncing. Any updates you make on your QuickBooks Online automatically reflect on your WooCommerce store and vice versa.

7. Stock Synchronization for WooCommerce

Stock Synchronization for WooCommerce

Suppliers usually keep their inventory in a regularly updated file that you can sync to update your stock. With Stock Synchronization for WooCommerce, you can synchronize your stock quantities from an external CSV file, Google Spreadsheet, Google Drive, Dropbox, or FTP. You can also synchronize your product prices by simply updating your product prices from the same CSV file.

Other features:

    • multi-vendor support
    • daily, twice daily, or hourly updates
    • compatible with variation products

8. Product Alerts for WooCommerce

Product Alerts for WooCommerce

You need a system to notify you when your stock levels are running low. It should be able to do so by sending low stock alerts via email, SMS, or notifications on your dashboard.

Using Product Alerts for WooCommerce, you can enable or disable this alert for individual products, set the low stock quantity, and set the message subject, heading, and types of message you would like to receive: HTML, plain text, or multipart.

9. WooCommerce Product Stock Manager

WooCommerce Product Stock Manager

WooCommerce Product Stock Manager makes it easy for you to manage stock for your products. On the admin interface, you can add products by product name and ID, status, weight, SKU, title, and much more. You can also search for products by name within the same page, and even edit and update information.

You can manage the sale price of all products in the same window. You can also do bulk edits and updates for variation products. Variations will include attributes like SKU, sale price, regular price, stock status, and more. There is color labeling of low and full stock.

Free Inventory Plugins for WooCommerce and WordPress

Z Inventory Manager: Inventory Tracking and Management Plugin

Z Inventory Manager – Inventory Tracking and Management Plugin

Z Inventory Manager lets you manage your inventory and check stock levels in real time. You can act on low inventory and generate purchase orders to fill your stock, and then keep track as your items arrive with purchase receipts. Reports allow you to monitor all your inventory at a glance and focus on specific items.

WooCommerce POS Inventory Count

WooCommerce POS Inventory Count

If you want to conduct a physical inventory check by scanning QR codes and importing and updating the quantities in an electronic system, try WooCommerce POS Inventory Count. It’s a simple, free WooCommerce plugin that makes it easy to keep track of physical inventory.

Importance of Inventory Management

Inventory done right means happy customers, which translates to return customers.

Inventory management means planning, forecasting, and being aware of different seasons of the year because some products perform better in particular seasons. It also means that if products are left over at the end of the season, instead of letting them fill up space, you can offer them at a discounted price in the next season to get rid of them and open up space for newer products.

Inventory Management Best Practices

Choosing the right inventory management plugin is only one aspect of inventory management.

When inventory management is not done right, some problems you will come across include:

    • overstock
    • out of stock
    • back orders
    • no idea what location a product is housed in
    • mis-picks
    • mis-shipment
    • defective products shipped

Let’s look at some inventory management best practices that will help you avoid these problems.

Proper Training of Inventory Staff

Nearly every aspect of your business is dependent on a proper inventory count. When the inventory shows an item is available and this turns out to be wrong, it puts salespeople in the uncomfortable position of explaining to customers why they sold something that wasn’t available. Train your staff on how to manage inventory and how to use the in-house inventory management system.

Investing in Counting Cycles

How many inventory counts do you want to have each year? Do you want to have a continuous or periodic count? Categorize which products to give priority in each count? Do you want to order yearly or periodically?

Connect Your Inventory System to Your Sales System

Every item that is sold should be automatically deducted from the inventory so you can see what your true stock levels are. Yes, you’ll still need to count your stock when the time comes in order to smooth out discrepancies.

Understand Your Best Customers

What your best customers buy can often be a reflection of a market trend, and you can promote it to customers that fit a similar profile. Knowing what they want helps you have it in stock. Don’t disappoint your return customers!

Prioritize Quality Control

Do your products meet the quality standards that customers expect? Defects in products mean loss of sales as a result of returns and customer dissatisfaction. This is where quality control comes in.

    1. Implement a system for detecting defective products. Look out for defects such as tears, breakages, leakages, color discrepancies, or faulty descriptions on labels.
    1. Count damaged or defective products separately. Many defective products indicate poor storage conditions, bad quality control by manufacturers, or a flawed transportation process. Of course, return damaged goods to manufacturers for a refund or replacement.
    1. Storage conditions can also affect the quality of your products. Think about what storage conditions are ideal for your inventory. Consider the effect that light, heat, or humidity can have on your products.

Take Advantage of Surplus Stock

Surplus stock creates an opportunity for sales and promotions. This can be a source of easy money. Donate what you can’t sell and get a tax write-off instead of dumping it.

What Should You Look for in an Inventory Management Plugin?

Here are some things you should consider when choosing an inventory management system:

Compatibility and Customization

In addition to being able to customize it to the specific needs of your company, an inventory system should be compatible with your existing software and hardware.

Variants and Composite Products

Same products can come in different colors or alternative feature sets. The system must be capable of accommodating variants. And if you want to create new product packages by combining existing products, then the system should accommodate composite products.

Scalability

An inventory management system should be capable of growing and expanding with your business. Looking for a new system years down the road will cause unwanted distraction.

Offline Access and Synchronization

An inventory management system should allow you to access your files both online and offline, so you can provide uninterrupted service to your customers. It should also be capable of offline-to-online synchronization so you don’t need to worry about losing any information.

Mobile Access

You may need to be able to manage your inventory anytime, anywhere, from your smartphone or tablet, and even create purchase orders automatically from your mobile.

Integration With Third-Party Services

Compatibility with other plugins, including third-party services like payment gateways, marketing gateways, etc., should be a no-brainer.

Security, Technical Support, Regular Updates

The safety of your customers’ personal and financial information should be a high priority.

Incredible Indigenous Web Design From Around The World

As a way to commemorate this special day, we will be highlighting some of the most talented Indigenous designers from all over the world, as well as sharing some fascinating research conducted by the University of Newcastle that focuses on things that should be kept in mind when designing websites for Indigenous people.

However, before…

Did It Cross Your Mind?

When compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts, employed Indigenous peoples make up 47% of the world’s total population but just 17% of the workforce. The gender disparity is considerably more pronounced in this regard.

Indigenous peoples make up just 5% of the total population of the planet yet are responsible for 15% of its most acute poverty.

More than 86% of Indigenous peoples throughout the world are employed in the unofficial sector of the economy, while only 66% of their non-Indigenous counterparts are employed in this sector.

There is indigenous rock art in Australia that dates back more than 30,000 years, making it some of the oldest rock art in the world. Some of this rock art may be found in caves and rock shelters.

Indigenous Design Study: Design Issues

Identifying Cultural Design Requirements for an Australian Indigenous Website is the title of a study that was conducted by the University of Newcastle. The purpose of the study was to investigate the essential characteristics of websites that are constructed with the needs of Indigenous communities in mind. The focus of the article is on developing a website for the Wollotuka community; however, it also compiles a large number of additional research and insights that have broader applicability.

It begins by providing a concise summary of the design challenges that, among other things, might prohibit websites from being accessible to Indigenous groups.

Learnability may be negatively impacted by the use of visuals (sceneries, persons, architecture, and traditions) that are not from the target region (Barber & Badre 1998).

Icons that are thought to be worldwide are not always recognized all over the world (Brugger 1990).

The ways in which various cultures depict things like time, numerals, and dates are culturally specific (Callahan 2005; del Galdo 1990).

The use of icons rather than words for navigation may have different effects on rates of error and the amount of time needed to complete tasks depending on culture (Choong & Salvendy 1998).

It may also be difficult to translate the text of the menus, boxes, and icons due to the fact that the length of words differs from language to language (Dray, 1996).

Indigenous Design Study: Tips for Indigenous Web Design

The same research compiles a list of guidelines and recommendations for making online design as welcoming and accessible to members of Indigenous communities as is practicable, for instance:

Any attempt to convey Aboriginal knowledge has to address the defining traits and cultural practices of the people (Pumpa et al. 2006). This includes activities that have been carried on for generations, such as music and dance.

Because the environment plays such a significant part in the tales told by Australia’s Indigenous people (Turner 2006), this theme may also play a significant role in the design of digital environments.

Images of familiar, tangible objects that are known and liked by the audience serve as the primary communication mechanism and are also a text in and of themselves. The use of local photos and images of people is really necessary (Williams 2002).

It is recommended to use navigation based on visuals rather than navigation tied to words (Williams 2002).

Instead of text-based settings, provide ones that are rich in multimedia and combine a variety of audio and visual approaches to encourage users to make use of them. (Fischer 1995, Buchtmann 1999).

There are 8 indigenous designers and design agencies that are just great.

Obviously, the work of each designer is one of a kind, and there are many dazzling instances of Indigenous design all throughout the world. On the other hand, we have included a list of several designers as well as design organizations who have captured our attention in recent times. Please add to the list in the comments section below if you can think of anybody else who should be included on it.

The Best “CSS Checkbox Hack” Tutorials on Tuts+
Web Designing

The Best “CSS Checkbox Hack” Tutorials on Tuts+

[ad_1]

Today we’ll discuss the “CSS checkbox hack technique”, a neat way to simulate JavaScript’s click event on CSS elements. Along the way, we’ll explore the best tutorials that use this technique and are available on Envato Tuts+.

7 CSS “Checkbox Hack” Tutorials

Now that we know what the “checkbox hack” is all about, let’s see it in action through different exercises that are available on Tuts+!

1. Pure CSS Slideshow

Did you know that you can build a CSS-only slideshow?

The demo below covers the steps needed for building a fully functional CSS slideshow. It comes with a lot of the common slideshow features like arrow navigation, dot navigation, thumbnail navigation, and keyboard navigation.

In this exercise, we’re building a theme switcher. There’s a color palette from which we can select the desired color scheme.

3. Toggle Switch Component

Toggle switches are a popular design trend that we all have seen at some point. Their primary use is for adjusting settings (e.g. phone settings). They have two states (on/off), one of which is predefined like radio buttons.

This exercise shows how to develop a switch component for a to-do checklist.

4. Off-Canvas Form

Off-canvas/hidden content is another common design pattern that is mostly used in mobile layouts due to the limited space. Multilevel menus, forms, or other types of information are moved outside of the visible part of the website by default and appear when the user clicks on an associated element (link, button, etc.).

This tutorial teaches you how to build an off-canvas feedback form.

5. Accordion Component

In this exercise, we’re creating a responsive accordion. On mobile layouts, it has a vertical layout, whereas on desktop screens a horizontal one.

6. Filtering Component

This is one of my favorite exercises. Here we’re covering a way to build a filtering component. Lots of useful test cases in the real world based on it!

In this exercise, we’re learning how to create custom checkboxes and radio buttons for the WordPress Contact Form 7 (CF7) plugin. CSS for checkboxes can be messy, and the challenge here is that we don’t use our markup (we’ve to adapt to the markup produced by the plugin) but we do it quite gracefully.

Conclusion

Hopefully, this list has given you enough inspiration to understand the power of the “CSS checkbox hack technique”. Enjoy the demos, read the associated tutorials, and last but not least, be sure to follow Envato Tuts+ on CodePen for more creative pens!

How to Add an FAQ Accordion to Your Website

In this example, we are going to create an FAQ section for our online store using one of our best accordion plugins for WordPress.

First, we need to create a category for our FAQ accordion so the plugin knows what content to add to each specific accordion. Once you have installed the Accordion FAQ WordPress plugin, head on over to WP Dashboard > FAQ > Categories. In the name field, we will type “Online Store” and click the Add New Category button.

Next, we will click on WP Dashboard > FAQ > Add New. We will add our three FAQ entries this way. We will include the question in the title and the answer in the text editor.

Creating FAQ Entry

For each of our entries, we will make sure to click the checkbox next to the category, Online Store, that we created to make sure we group the entries together.

Once we have added our three FAQ entries for our online store, it’s time to add the accordion widget to a page. On an existing or new page or post, click on the Add Shortcode button on the top of the text editor. Choose Insert FAQs from the Select a Shortcode drop-down menu. From here, we will be given a basic group of settings for us to change. We will choose the Online Store category from the Faq Category option and change the Icon Background Color to blue.

Changing Accordion Settings

Click the Insert Shortcode button, and the shortcode will be added to the text editor. The FAQ accordion will now be displayed on your webpage for all your users to see!

Free WordPress Tutorials and Courses for Novices

Learn the fundamentals of WordPress by following along with one of these two amazing and totally free courses geared at novices. You may go from knowing nothing at all to being able to establish a WordPress website and even begin tweaking and coding your own themes with the help of these instructions. For further information, subscribe to the Tuts+ channel on YouTube.

What are Some Reasons You Might Want to Learn WordPress?

WordPress is one of the most widely used open-source content management system (CMS) frameworks. You may use it to develop websites of varying complexity, from simple blogs to fully functional online stores. It is quite simple to use, and it can be installed on your server in a matter of minutes. According to the statistics, WordPress is used to power nearly 38% to 40% of all websites, and each day, new websites are added to its roster of clients.

WordPress is a content management system that enables website administrators to develop websites relatively simply and fast. As a result of its widespread usage, there are literally thousands upon thousands of pre-made themes and plugins that are at your disposal. In addition to that, the administrative control panel of your website may have other tools, such as page builders, that enable you to fully personalize the appearance of your website.

On the other hand, WordPress is totally open to the developers’ personalization in any way they see fit. If you educate yourself on how to develop custom plugins and themes for use with WordPress, there is very little that you won’t be able to do.

Today, we’ll investigate WordPress from two different vantage points: that of a site administrator and that of a developer.

Figure out how to use WordPress.

In this part of the tutorial, we’ll look at the dashboard that comes with WordPress.

Before we continue, I will assume that you have a functioning installation of WordPress and that you have access to the administrative dashboard. In the event that you have not yet installed WordPress or are unsure of how to do so, we have written an article that provides a step-by-step guide to the installation procedure. After you have completed the installation, we will be able to proceed to the next step.

Dashboard Overview

The WordPress administrative interface presents the dashboard in the form depicted in the following snapshot after you have successfully logged in.

WordPress DashboardWordPress DashboardWordPress Dashboard

On the left hand side, it displays the main navigation links that you could use to navigate to the different sections of the website. On the right hand side, it displays a few quick links and a few widgets like Activity, At a Glance, Site Health Status and more. You could use the drag-and-drop feature to reorder widgets, and you could also display more widgets on the dashboard as per the requirements.

Now, we’ll briefly discuss the important sections on the dashboard.

Posts

It’s difficult to imagine a WordPress site without posts. In fact, posts are the heart of any WordPress website. Mainly they allow you to manage categories and posts on your website. You can add new posts, as well as edit and delete existing posts in this section. This is the section you will deal with most of the time.

Media

When you create content on your website, you may need to embed different types of media files along with the text content, it could be images, videos, pdf files and alike. The media section is a central place where you could manage all media files of your website. Once you upload files in this section, it would be available to you when you create posts or pages.

Pages

In this section, you can manage the static pages of your website. A page in WordPress is a different type of content which you want to use when you create a content which is purely static and doesn’t need publishing features.

Comments

The comments section allows you to manage post comments that are made by users. You could perform different operations like Approve, Unapprove, Mark as Spam and Move to trash.

Appearance

The appearance section allows you to configure and control theme-related aspects of your website. In fact, it provides a whole lot of options that you can use to change the look and feel of your website. Importantly, it allows you to install new themes and switch between different themes.

Plugins

The plugin section allows you to install and configure third-party plugins in your website. The WordPress marketplace provides thousands of the plugins, so you can find and install plugins for any feature.

Users

The users section allows you to manage users in your website. You could create different types of users like Subscriber, Contributor, Author, Editor and Admin.

Settings

In this section, you can configure the global settings of your website. It contains various settings like date format in posts, thumbnail image size, or number of posts to display.

How to Create Your First Post

In this section, we’ll see how to create posts in WordPress.

Head over to the back-end and go to the Posts > Add New section. It should open the following UI.

Add New PostAdd New PostAdd New Post

It provides a nice and intuitive UI which makes it easy for you to create and publish posts effortlessly. You can add title, description and configure different settings of the post. In the description section, you could insert different blocks like paragraph, quote, image, heading etc. to add different types of content. It allows you to format your posts according to the different types of blocks.

Apart from this, you could assign a post to the specific category, add featured image and do a couple of more settings under the Document tab on the right hand side.

Once you’ve entered the content, click on the Publish button on the top right to publish the post! Head over to the front-end, go to that post. In my case, it looks like this!

So that’s how you could create blog posts from the back-end. Similarly, you could add static pages as well under the Pages section.

How to Use the Media Manager

In this section, we’ll see how you could manage different types of media files in WordPress.

Head over to your WordPress dashboard and navigate to Media > Add New. It will display the following screen.

Click on the Select Files button, which allows you to choose files from your computer that you want to upload. Select the desired files, and they’ll be uploaded right away, as shown in the following screenshot.

The above UI allows you to edit the image, add a few image details like caption, description etc.

In this way, you could manage files with the Media manager.

WordPress Themes

In this section, we’ll discuss WordPress themes. A WordPress theme is responsible for the look and feel of your website. By default, WordPress provides a couple of basic themes to start with, but you could always download and install third-party themes of your choice. Of course, you could build your custom theme as well if you want to customize the front-end as per your requirements.

How to Activate Themes

Go to the Appearance > Themes section, and it should list out the built-in themes as shown in the following screenshot.

WordPress ThemesWordPress ThemesWordPress Themes

The default theme in WordPress is Twenty Twenty, and you could see it as an active theme. If you want to activate any other theme, you just need to click on the Activate button as shown in the following screenshot.

Activate WordPress ThemeActivate WordPress ThemeActivate WordPress Theme

How to Customize the Default Theme Settings

For each theme, you could customize a few settings under the theme configuration section. Let’s quickly go through how to do it. Click on the Customize button for the active theme as shown in the following screenshot.

Customize Theme ButtonCustomize Theme ButtonCustomize Theme Button

Once you click on the customize button, it takes you to the following page.

Theme Customization UITheme Customization UITheme Customization UI

Here you can configure different settings like Site identity, Colors, Additional CSS, Menus and more. These settings are theme specific settings, so it’s up to the theme provider how many settings they provide in the configuration section. If you’re using an advanced theme, you would see a whole lot of configuration options in this section.

Specifically, Menus and Widgets settings are important ones. Menus settings allow you to display menus at different locations supported by the active theme. In the following screenshot, you could see that the active theme supports two locations: Top Menu and Social Links Menu.

Customize MenusCustomize MenusCustomize Menus

On the other hand, widgets are blocks that are displayed at different positions of your web page like left sidebar, right sidebar, footer-1, footer-2 etc. Widgets are really useful in a way that they add content and features to your website. For example, you could have different widgets like recent posts, most viewed posts, image galleries, recent comments and many more.

It’s up to template to provide different widget positions that you could use to display content. For example, the Twenty Seventeen theme provides three widget positions as shown in the following screenshot. You could also see the widgets preview on the right hand side.

Widget Positions and PreviewWidget Positions and PreviewWidget Positions and Preview

If you want to add a new widget, you just need to click on the widget position. Once you click on that, you could use the Add a Widget button to add widgets in that position. When you click on the Add a Widget button, it allows you to choose from the different types of widgets as shown in the following screenshot.

Add New WidgetAdd New WidgetAdd New Widget

As you could see, you could choose from the different types of widgets like Archives, Audio, Custom HTML and many more. Feel free to play with it and observe the changes in the front-end.

How to Install Themes

Although, built-in WordPress themes are a great starting point and good to experiment with, if you want to build a professional website, you would like to use a third-party theme or build your own custom theme. In this section, we’ll discuss how you can install third-party themes.

When you purchase or download a theme, you would get a .zip theme file which is used for theme installation. Go to the Appearance > Themes section, and click on the Add New button. Next, click on the Upload Theme button which opens the following popup.

Install ThemeInstall ThemeInstall Theme

Installing the.zip file requires you to first upload it by clicking the Browse button, and then you must click the Install Now button. And with that, a WordPress theme has been effectively installed on your website!

In conclusion, that wraps up my condensed tour of WordPress themes.

WordPress Add-ons and Plugins

Because WordPress is a content management system (CMS) and a platform for blogging at its core, the basic features of WordPress focus on these two functions. WordPress plugins are what you should seek for if you wish to enhance the functionality of WordPress by adding new features.

A WordPress Plugin is a third-party package that can be installed on your site to improve the functionality of WordPress. Plugins may be found in the WordPress plugin directory. There are many of free plugins that can be downloaded from the WordPress marketplace, but if you want more sophisticated capabilities, you can also buy premium plugins.

You could, for instance, install an e-commerce plugin on your website, which would then function as an online shopping cart once it was activated. On the other hand, you may transform your website into an online gateway by using a number of different plugins in conjunction with one another. Therefore, all you need to do is conduct a search for the appropriate plugins that meet your criteria, download them, and then install them on your website.

The Step-by-Step Guide to Installing WordPress Plugins

The process of installing WordPress plugins is rather similar to that of installing themes, and we have previously covered it in a previous section.

To add a plugin developed by a third party, go to the Plugins > Add New menu option. Next, choose the plugin you want to add by clicking on the Upload Plugin button. This will bring up a window where you may select the plugin’s.zip file to add. In order to complete the installation, click the box labeled Install Now. You’ve just finished a successful installation of a WordPress plugin. Congratulations!

The Step-by-Step Guide to Mastering WordPress Development

In this part of the article, we will talk about WordPress from the perspective of a developer. I’ll point out a number of things you may start with if you’re interested in developing for WordPress and want to become a WordPress developer.

Technologies WordPress is Constructed Using

PHP, which is one of the most common server-side scripting languages used for web development, and MySQL, which is an open-source relational database management system, are the primary building blocks of WordPress. In addition to that, it requires the use of a web server application such as Apache, Nginx, or IIS.

Before you start working with WordPress, you should become familiar with PHP and MySQL if you haven’t already done so. On the other side, if you already know it and you’ve previously constructed websites based on it, starting to learn WordPress should be simple for you to do since WordPress is based on what you already know.

What Types of WordPress Development Skills Should You Acquire?

When it comes to developing custom features for WordPress, there are primarily two areas on which you should concentrate your efforts and become an expert.

custom plugin development

design and creation of bespoke themes

You will get familiar with the inner workings of WordPress, its APIs, and a great deal more as you walk through the process of learning how to design custom themes and plugins.

Development of Individualized Plugins

As was just said, WordPress plugins extend the capabilities of WordPress by layering additional functionality on top of its core capability. In point of fact, it is impossible to envisage a WordPress website that exists in the real world and operates without the need of any third-party plugins. If you are able to understand custom plugin creation, you will be able to add custom features on top of WordPress. Since WordPress websites need plugins in some form or another, this opens the door for you to add such features.

The construction of custom plugins is more closely related to programming, and it is essential to have a thorough grasp of the fundamentals of both PHP and MySQL before beginning. If you have previous knowledge with programming, getting started with this ought to be extremely simple for you.

Development of Individualized Themes

If developing plugins is more of a programming-focused endeavor, then developing custom themes is more of a designing-focused one. It is possible to entirely transform the appearance of your website by selecting one of the tens of thousands of third-party themes that are now accessible. These themes may be downloaded for free or for a charge and then activated.

Learning how to use software like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, which are programs that let you design websites, is necessary if you want to have a career as a professional theme developer. After that, you will need to turn the design into an HTML document. And lastly, you would get familiar with the structure of the WordPress theme, which would allow you to transform the HTML into the WordPress theme.

How to Create Your Website’s Homepage with Elementor

In this tutorial, we’re going to walk through the various ways you can create a homepage with Elementor. Then, we’ll take a look at some tips to help you get better results—with visitors and search engines—from your homepage.

The homepage is arguably the most important page on a website. Even if visitors don’t initially land on the homepage, they’re likely to end up there at some point.

That’s because, as consumers, we know that the homepage gives us the best bird’s-eye view of what a website and the company behind it have to offer. That’s why it’s critical to design a homepage that looks attractive, is easy to engage with, and motivates visitors to take the next step.

Elementor Template Kits on Envato Elements

You can download unlimited Template Kits for Elementor with your Envato Elements subscription, to use with your WordPress website. Envato Elements also gives you access to thousands of other creative assets, like icons, graphics, video templates, email templates, HTML templates, Photoshop actions, you name it!

Now let’s dive into all the ways you can create your Elementor homepage!

6 Ways to Create the Homepage with Elementor

The great thing about using Elementor is that it’s flexible. Whether you want to use it as a total website building solution or only need it to streamline how you edit pages, there’s a way to make it work for your personal approach.

In terms of how you create a homepage with Elementor, there are six ways to do it:

Option 1: Customize a Premium WordPress Theme Demo

ThemeForest has over 3,500 Elementor-compatible WordPress themes:

Depending on the one you use, it will either include a single template or various demos for the homepage.

To use a premium theme with Elementor, go to Appearance and Themes. Click the Add New button and you’ll be taken to a page where you can upload your theme files:

To import the homepage template or demo, look for a new area of WordPress named after the theme. There should be an area in there called Import Demo.

After you’ve completed the process to import it, you’ll find a new page called Home that you can customize with Elementor.

Option 2: Start with an Envato Elements Template Kit

Envato Elements has more than 2,400 website template kits that are compatible with Elementor:

These kits come with templates for the most common web pages, including the homepage. What’s nice about this option is that you don’t need to import every page template into your website. You can pick and choose which ones you need.

To import one of these kits, install the Template Kit — Import plugin. Open up Tools and Template Kit:

From here, you can either find a kit you like and import it or upload the kit file you got directly from Envato Elements. When importing is done, you’ll have a new homepage ready to go under Pages.

Option 3: Install an Elementor Kit

Elementor has its own website template kits, which you’ll find under Templates > Kit Library.

There are over 100 to choose from, though some require you to have a Pro or Expert membership to gain access. The nice thing about this option is that you’re able to choose from fully designed templates as well as basic wireframes.

Find the kit you want to use, click on it, and then click on the green Apply Kit button in the top-right corner:

When the kit finishes loading, you’ll be able to hop inside to edit your new homepage.

Option 4: Use an Elementor Homepage Template

In addition to full website demos, Elementor also offers a great collection of page templates for the most common web pages. Open up the templates folder inside the Elementor editor and do a search for “Home” to see what’s available:

The vast majority of page templates are only available to Pro users, so that’s something to keep in mind if this is the route you want to go.

When choosing a homepage template, don’t stress about the exact content that’s in them. All of that has to be edited. What you want to do is find one with a general style and layout that you like. This will minimize how much you need to edit the homepage in Elementor.

When you find a homepage template you like, select it and click on the green Insert button to add it to the page:

The template is now yours to customize.

info

If you go with Options 4, 5, or 6, you’ll need to manually configure the homepage to render as the homepage.

After you’ve published your homepage, go to Settings > Reading:

By default, WordPress will set the homepage to Your latest posts. If you use a theme’s demo content or a premade website kit, they almost always take care of switching that setting to A static page as well as the newly created Home page.

If you’re not leveraging premade page designs, you’ll have to configure this by hand from the Settings panel.

Option 5: Compile the Homepage using Elementor Block Templates

If you can’t find a homepage template that contains the kind of content or structures you want to include in yours, Elementor block templates are a good workaround:

Many of these block templates look more like wireframes than complete designs, which is nice as you won’t have to strip out or edit as much content that way. These blocks are also helpful if you want to add new sections to premade templates or themes.

The process to add block templates is the same as adding a full-page template. You’ll just have to add them one at a time.

It’s okay if you don’t add them in the right order. Elementor makes it easy to drag-and-drop them into place. You can also use the Navigator tool to quickly make composition changes.

Option 6: Build the Homepage with Elementor, From Scratch

If you have a very specific vision for your homepage, you might decide it’s better to build it by hand using the Elementor visual editor:

With a Pro subscription, you’ll have dozens of Elementor widgets to build with—in addition to section editing capabilities. You can also switch it up by building some sections by hand and then utilizing block templates to fill in the rest.

It may take longer to go this route, but the end result will be 100% your creation.

Tips for Designing a Homepage with Elementor

The six options above outline the first steps you’ll take to create your homepage. Here are some things to keep in mind as you edit your homepage in Elementor.

1. Spend Extra Time on the Hero Section

Aside from the website header, the hero section will be the first thing that people see on your homepage. So you need to make it count.

While WordPress themes and Elementor templates do a good job of mixing high-impact typography, eye-catching multimedia, and creative layouts, think about how many people are using these premade designs. This is why so many websites look the same.

In order to make your hero section stand out, use your template as a place to jump off from. For instance, this is one of Elementor’s wireframe homepage templates:

Elementor not only gives users full control over every detail, but Pro users also have access to advanced features like Lottie:

With a bright pop of color, some creative manipulation of a Lottie file, and typography motion effects, this is just one way to transform an uninspired hero section design.

2. Be Careful About How Much Content You Add

Elementor WordPress themes and page templates are great because they’ll usually get you about 75% of the way there. However, every website is different.

For example, let’s say you’re building a website for a brand new consulting agency. The homepage template you used includes a section for testimonials. However, the agency has yet to get any clients. So, you delete the testimonials section.

Be careful about thinking you have to add something into the homepage for anything you remove. A longer homepage isn’t always better, especially when it comes to the mobile experience.

To keep an eye on the length of your homepage, open the Navigator tool. You’ll find it in the bottom-left toolbar — it’s the second icon from the left.

With the Navigator tool open, you can see the entirety of your homepage all at once. If you have more than eight or nine sections, then you probably have too much content.

Look for duplicate sections or ones that cover something secondary to the primary purpose of the website. Delete them and keep your homepage long enough to be informative but short enough so that it’s easy to digest.

3. Use Elementor’s Site Settings Tools to Ensure Consistency

When it comes to editing the homepage in Elementor, it becomes more difficult to track the design choices you made previously.

One thing you can do to ensure you consistently use color and typography throughout the homepage and website is to create a style guide. If you don’t want to build a formal style guide for your brand, you can use Elementor’s global styling tools to create one inside of WordPress.

When you’re inside the Elementor editor, click on the hamburger menu icon in the top-left corner. Then select Site Settings. From here, you can set your Global Fonts and Global Colors:

In addition, you can configure:

    • Typography styles for different types of text

    • Global button designs

    • Image settings related to borders, opacity, shadows, and CSS filters

    • Form field design settings

    • Default website backgrounds, layouts, transitions, and more

Not only do these Elementor settings help you keep consistent when designing, but they’ll save you from having to program in the same styles over and over again.

4. Always Include a Call-to-Action As the Last Section

There’s a UX Law called the Serial Position Effect. What it says is that people tend to remember the first and last items better than everything else in between.

This theory is super relevant to the way you structure your homepage. While visitors will peruse the sections in between, it’s the first (i.e. the hero section) and last one that will leave the strongest impression.

As such, the last section on the homepage should always be a call-to-action.

Your WordPress theme or Elementor template should already have one built in. You’ll have to customize what it says and how it looks regardless. However, you might also want to change the call-to-action itself.

If that’s the case, you have a couple of ways to do this. One option is to use an Elementor block template. You’ll find ones designed specifically for the Call To Action category. However, also check out the ones under Contact, Subscribe, and Footer:

You may find something closer to what you need there. You can also build it from scratch using Elementor widgets. All the building blocks you’d need—like buttons, forms, and maps—are there.

You don’t need to be a professional SEO specialist in order to optimize a homepage to rank better in search results pages.

Here are some general tips to help you edit the homepage in Elementor for the purposes of SEO:

Tip #1: Make the First Headline on the Page an H1

Set this up under the HTML Tag setting:

Also, include your main keyword in the H1.

Tip #2: Make the Subsequent Section Headlines H2

They should be clear, jargon-free, and tell a linear story about the website.

Any boxes placed within an H2 section should be set to H3.

Tip #3: Add alt Text to Descriptive Images

This is a field that appears when you upload a file to the Media Library:

You only need to write a description of what’s visible in the image if it’s important. If the image is just there for decorative purposes or if it’s a generic stock photo, no alt text is needed.

Click on the eyeball icon in the bottom-left toolbar to open up the preview of the homepage. Scroll through the page and engage with it as a visitor would.

Confirm that the user-triggered effects work, including text, button, and image links. Also make sure that all links direct them to the correct pages.

Tip #5: Review Your Work in Responsive Mode

This is the second icon from the right in the bottom toolbar.

When responsive mode is activated, a small bar will appear at the top of the page. Click on the tablet and mobile icons and preview your website on smaller screens:

A fully responsive website is critical to the user experience and is something that gets factored into every website’s ranking. Ensure that your homepage looks great and everything works as it should when it’s viewed from smaller devices.

Conclusion

The homepage is the most important page on a website. For some visitors, it’s the gateway to the rest of the website. For others, it’s where they go to get a high-level overview of the site’s offering.

This is why you need a powerful page building solution like Elementor to create the homepage with.

One of the biggest benefits of using this page builder plugin is that it’s flexible. You can design your homepage using any method you prefer. What’s more, Elementor comes with a comprehensive collection of tools and templates that simplify the design process. As a bonus, most WordPress themes are compatible with Elementor, so you can leverage external resources and templates without fear of them not working with your page builder.
